Rob Beattie started playing bass at school when his fingers couldn't keep up with much faster hundred-miles-an-hour mates. Spent much  of the 1980s frequenting the folk/rock circuit, occasionally supporting  the likes of Maddy Prior, Martin Simpson, Michael Chapman, Happy Traum (Dylan's banjo player) and once memorably Richard & Linda Thompson.

Wrote a song - Red Tide - covered by Fairport Convention and was happily trio-ing with Brighton-based Lily & The Tigers when  Flyin' Eyes came calling.

Passed audition despite dose (of 'flu, it says here) and is now responsible for most of the notes that rumble below bottom 'G'.
